Peter Horvath‘s work utilizes multi-layered screen images (windows) wherin the cinematic is re-experienced through the digital diorama of the Web. The navigable interface of The Presence of Absence (2003) - ironically a face (a re-occuring focus of Horvaths work) - opens onto a series of videos heavily manipulated through collage, effects and distortion. The Presence of Absence submerges users into a fragmented screen space, placing into action a series of videos that unfold an open-ended non-linear narrative. Clustering in a series of overlapping windows, the videos are a visual study on distance and communication - appropriate themes for the Internet. Indexing the viewer‘s meditated presence through telecommunication devices, The Presence of Absence is emblematic in its use of a schizophrenic screen image
